USA Health Endocrinology recognized by American Diabetes Association

USA Health Division of Endocrinology's diabetes education program recently was recognized by the American Diabetes Association (ADA) for meeting the National Standards for Diabetes Self-Management Education and Support (DSMES).

"Achieving ADA recognition means that USA Health is providing the best possible care for our patients with diabetes," said Phyllus Justice, diabetes resource coordinator for USA Health. "Our diabetes education program supports informed decision making, self-care behaviors, problem-solving, and active collaboration with the health care team who has specialized clinical knowledge in diabetes."

The health care team at USA Health Division of Endocrinology is led by Dr. Wilburn Bolton III, assistant professor of internal medicine at the University of South Alabama College of Medicine and an endocrinologist with USA Health Physicians Group; Justice; Christie Veasey, clinical nurse; and Angela Shuey, clinical nurse supervisor.

"It is important for patients to learn how to manage diabetes well to prevent or delay the complications," Justice said. "Communicating the information and supporting skills needed to promote effective coping and management required for day-to-day living with diabetes requires a personalized and comprehensive approach."

According to the ADA, benefits of DSMES include improved clinical outcomes and quality of life, while reducing hospital admissions, re-admissions and estimated lifetime health care costs. Learn more at the American Diabetes Association.
