Sports medicine physician and pediatrician joins faculty

With a holistic approach to patient care, Sarah McMullin, M.D., recently joined USA Health as a sports medicine physician and pediatrician. 

She is an assistant professor in the department of family medicine and the department of pediatrics at the Frederick P. Whiddon College of Medicine at the University of South Alabama. She also serves as assistant director of the Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship Program.

McMullin enjoys treating patients of all ages and encourages physical activity as a pathway to lifelong health. She said she prefers to take a multifaceted, personal approach to her treatment plans, considering the entire body and mind. She has a special interest in working with young female athletes, as she grew up dancing, figure skating and participating in track and field.

McMullin grew up in New Brunswick, Canada, but has since lived and trained around the world. She earned her medical degree from St. George’s University School of Medicine in Newcastle, United Kingdom, and Grenada, West Indies. She completed her pediatrics residency at the University at Buffalo and completed a sports medicine fellowship at NYU Grossman School of Medicine. During fellowship, she had the opportunity to train at the Harkness Center for Dance Injuries, treating recreational and professional dancers from world-renowned companies in New York City and beyond.

McMullin is board certified by the American Board of Pediatrics with a Certificate of Added Qualifications in Sports Medicine. She is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, American College of Sports Medicine, American Medical Society for Sports Medicine, the International Association for Dance Medicine and Science, and the Gold Humanism Honor Society.

Emergency medicine welcomes pediatric emergency faculty

Paul D. Schneider, M.D., recently joined USA Health Children’s & Women’s Hospital as a pediatric emergency physician. He is also an assistant professor of emergency medicine at the Frederick P. Whiddon College of Medicine at the University of South Alabama.

A native of Birmingham, Schneider earned his medical degree and completed his residency training in pediatrics at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Following residency, he completed a fellowship in pediatric emergency medicine at the University of Louisville in Kentucky.

Schneider brings extensive experience in pediatric emergency medicine to his roles at USA Health and the Whiddon College of Medicine. Most recently, he worked in the pediatric emergency department at Niswonger Children's Hospital in Johnson City, Tennessee. Previously, he was an attending physician at East Tennessee Children's Hospital in Knoxville and Children's of Alabama in Birmingham. He also served on the clinical faculty at UAB as an assistant professor of pediatric emergency medicine.

He is board certified by the American Academy of Pediatrics and is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

What do you enjoy most about being a medical student at the Whiddon College of Medicine?
The friends I have made in my class and the diversity of ways we learn the material (auditorium lectures, research and analysis, team-based learning, and small-group learning communities).

Are you involved in any research, organizations or other initiatives at the College of Medicine?
I’m involved with the USA Student-Run Free Clinic.

What are your interests and hobbies?
I love to work out, watch Alabama football, hang out with my black lab, Miller, and eat at Mexican restaurants with my girlfriend.

What is something unique about you?
I completed the Mugshots Burger Challenge, which is more than 3 pounds of food in less than 12 minutes.

Now online: Read the new issue of USA Health magazine

The latest edition of USA Health magazine, which highlights news and stories from all facets of the health system, is now available to read online.

In this issue, you’ll meet 11-year-old Carmen Hunter, a bone cancer patient who lives life fully with a prosthetic leg; legacy families at the Frederick P. Whiddon College of Medicine; Daniel Childs, a Coast Guard officer who is fit for full duty after spine surgery; and Beth Rabren, a breast cancer survivor who donated funds for whole breast imaging.

Employees and students cheer on the Jags at Game Day

Faculty, staff and students from the Frederick P. Whiddon College of Medicine were among the sold-out crowd at Hancock Whitney Stadium on Thursday, Oct. 20, as the South Alabama Jaguars took on the Troy University Trojans.

During the third quarter, representatives from USA Health and the Whiddon College of Medicine were introduced on the field: Jacinta Watkins, secretary in the department of pathology; Amelia Hewes, M.D., an OB-GYN and assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology; Kelly Adams, an assistant in the department of internal medicine; Kevin Lee, Ph.D., assistant professor of research in gynecologic oncology at the Mitchell Cancer Institute; Hope Tindle, CRNP, a nurse practitioner in orthopaedic surgery; Meghan Hermance, Ph.D., assistant professor of microbiology and immunology; Lee Ann Brewer, RN, a nurse at the Mitchell Cancer Institute in Fairhope; Bonnie Lee, M.D., a surgeon and assistant professor of surgery; Helena Davis, a medical assistant in gynecologic oncology; and Marcelo Gerjoi, PA-C, a physician assistant in neurosurgery.
