Events planned for National Public Health Week April 1-7

In conjunction with the University of South Alabama Center for Healthy Communities, the USA College of Medicine Public Health Interest Group has planned several events for National Public Health Week (NPHW), April 1-7, that coordinate with the various daily themes set by American Public Health Association.

This year, the NPHW theme is “Creating the Healthiest Nation: For science. For action. For health.” The week will recognize the contributions of public health and highlight issues that are important to improving the community’s health. Events are open to all USA students, faculty and staff.

Monday, April 1 - Healthy Communities
#APHABillionSteps Walk
11:30 a.m. to noon, trails outside College of Medicine

Tuesday, April 2 - Violence Prevention
Self-defense class with Paige Farley, a first-year medical student trained in mixed martial arts
6:30 to 8 p.m., USA Rec Center, studio 2

Wednesday, April 3 - Rural Health
Affordable Care Act and Alabama Medicaid

Thursday, April 4 - Technology and Public Health
Documentary and panel discussion on the media’s influence in the anti-vaccination movement
6:30 to 8 p.m., College of Medicine first-floor auditorium

Friday, April 5 - Climate Change
Movement of Tropical Infectious Diseases

Saturday, April 6 and Sunday, April 7 - Global Health
New to USA in fall 2019 - global health concentration

Resources for the Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday topics will be delivered via email. Some events are limited to students or may require an RSVP. See the flyer for details.
