The Distinguished Scientist Seminar series at the University of South Alabama College of Medicine will follow a new format this academic year that puts a greater emphasis on translational research.
Speakers will deliver two presentations – one a clinically oriented Grand Rounds in a co-hosting clinical department and the second a scientific seminar hosted by one of the graduate training tracks.
When circumstances permit, a reception will be held for the speaker between the two presentations.

The first Distinguished Scientist Seminar for the 2012-13 academic year will be presented by Dr. Luis A. Fernandez, associate professor for the division of transplantation education and the department of surgery at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
The lecture, titled, “Islet Transplantation: What Have We Learned in the Past 10 Years?” will take place Thursday, Aug. 30, 2012, at 4 p.m. at the USAMC Conference Room.
On Friday, Aug. 31, 2012, Dr. Fernandez will present a second talk during Surgery Grand Rounds titled “Evidence Based Practice in Kidney Transplantation” at 7 a.m. at the USAMC Conference Room.
Dr. Fernandez’s research interests include pancreas, liver, islet cell, and renal transplantation.
Dr. Fernandez earned a medical degree from Universidad Central de Venezuela, Jose Maria Vargas School of Medicine. He did a fellowship in transplant surgery at University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics, and served as chief resident and conducted his residency in general surgery at University of Miami Jackson Memorial Hospital. Dr. Fernandez did a post-doctoral fellowship at University of Miami Diabetes Research Institute.
