The October Med School Café lecture will feature Dr. Lynn Dyess, professor of surgery at the University of South Alabama College of Medicine, and Dr. Joel Lightner, assistant professor of radiology at the University of South Alabama College of Medicine.
The lecture titled, “Breast Cancer Awareness,” will focus on the screening, detection and current controversies of breast cancer. Dr. Lightner will discuss the innovative tools used to diagnosis breast cancer, and Dr. Dyess will discuss the latest treatment options. The lecture will take place on Oct. 23, 2014, at the USA Faculty Club on USA’s main campus. Lunch will be served at 11:30 a.m., and the presentation will begin at noon.
Dr. Lynn Dyess is a surgeon with the USA Physicians Group and the USA Mitchell Cancer Institute. She earned her medical degree from USA College of Medicine. She conducted her residency in general surgery and a fellowship in burns and critical care at USA.
Dr. Joel Lightner is a radiologist with the USA Physicians Group who specializes in mammography at USA Children’s and Women’s Hospital. He earned his medical degree from Mercer University School of Medicine in Macon, Ga. He completed an internship in internal medicine at Tulane School of Medicine in New Orleans and a residency in diagnostic radiology at the University of Vermont in Burlington, Vt. In addition, he conducted a fellowship in breast imaging at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Va.
October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is an annual campaign to increase awareness of the disease. Breast cancer is the second most common kind of cancer in women. About 1 in 8 women born in the United States will get breast cancer at some point.
