Academic title: Assistant professor of emergency medicine and director of emergency medicine ultrasound
Joined the USA College of Medicine faculty: October 2020
What does your position in the USA COM/USA Health entail?
My main academic role in the Department of Emergency Medicine is to run our ultrasound program. Since starting in October, I’ve designed our ultrasound program and curriculum from the ground up. Our ultrasound program includes both resident education as well as departmental quality assurance and continuing medical education. The other hat I wear is assistant professor, and I participate in general resident education, mentoring and research.
What is your favorite or most rewarding part of your position?
The most rewarding part of my position is watching residents progress year to year and eventually graduate. I like seeing their skills progress and watching their confidence grow. The physician at graduation is not the same person day one of intern year. Knowing that I played a part in training our excellent residents is extremely rewarding.
What research or other initiatives are you involved in?
My main interests are education and ultrasound, and I have ideas for multiple ultrasound-related projects in the works. We’ve recently greatly expanded our ultrasound simulation curriculum, and we are working on a medical student ultrasound elective.
What is your advice for medical students?
Spend time in medical school exploring and exposing yourself to as many specialties as you can. Remember that every specialty has both good things and bad things. Figure out what the bread and butter of the specialty is to get an idea of what the day-to-day practice will be like. Ask both residents and attendings what they do outside of work to get an idea of what life would be like in that specialty.
What are your hobbies/interests outside of work?
Boating, wakesurfing, wakeboarding and the beach
