James Sexson, M.D. |
Prior to joining USA Health, Sexson was the medical director of Wayne Memorial Hospital in Atlanta for 10 years. He also has experience as a medical director in nursing home facilities, leading the Brian Center Health and Rehabilitation in Canton, Georgia, to achieve accreditation from The Joint Commission.
Sexson graduated from Birmingham-Southern College and received his medical degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. After medical school, he completed his residency in internal medicine at the Carraway Methodist Medical Center in Birmingham.
He specializes in internal medicine because he’s passionate about helping others achieve their optimum health, he said.
Sexson’s father was a colonel in the U.S. Air Force and later worked for the Pentagon, so the family moved frequently growing up. Born in Colorado, Sexson considers himself from Montgomery, Alabama. He later joined the military, starting at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery. He served as chief for cardiopulmonary services from 1991 to 1992 in the Medical Corps for the Air Force. He was promoted to chief of internal medicine the following year.
Sexson expressed his gratitude toward USA Health pulmonologist Philip Almalouf, M.D., who gave him his first tour of the location. He said he appreciates the academic medicine side of working at USA Health.
“I am looking forward to the academic environment where so much cross-pollination occurs,” said Sexson, who is an assistant professor of internal medicine at the Whiddon College of Medicine. “We learn more from students than they ever know.”
