Med School Café - Expert Advice for the Community

This week, Dr. Crisostomo Baliog, assistant professor of internal medicine at the University of South Alabama College of Medicine, presented the March Med School Café lecture.

The lecture, "Lupus: Fact or Fiction? Things Patients Should Know but Are Afraid to Ask," had a total of 82 attendees.

At the lecture, Dr. Baliog discussed systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), a long-term autoimmune disorder. During the talk, he discussed common clinical presentations of SLE, what causes it, common misconceptions, and current treatment. He also gave an introduction of the planned dedicated Lupus Clinic in the Mastin Building at the USA Medical Center campus.

The University of South Alabama Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology will be hosting its 21st annual conference April 12-13, 2012, at the Daphne Civic Center at 2603 Highway 98 in Daphne, Ala.

Guest speakers and topics include: “Labor and Delivery Safety Programs” by Dr. Thomas J. Garite, professor emeritus at the University of California Irvine College of Medicine; “Junk Science in Obstetrics and Gynecology” by Dr. Brian K. Iriye, subspecialist in maternal-fetal medicine at the Center for Maternal Fetal Medicine in Las Vegas; “Long-Acting Reversible Contraception in Adolescents” by Dr. Elizabeth Lorde-Rollins, assistant professor of the obstetrics and gynecology and pediatrics department at Mount Sinai Adolescent Health Center in New York; and “Medical Missions” by Dr. Betty Ruth Speir, retired obstetrician/gynecologist in Point Clear, Ala.

USA College of Medicine to Host Gumbo Chili Showdown This Weekend


The fourth annual Gumbo Chili Showdown will be held this Saturday, March 24, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. preceding the University of South Alabama Jaguars Spring Game at Ladd-Peebles Stadium.

The event supports a scholarship at the USA College of Medicine created in memory of Regan Robinson, a medical student at USA who was diagnosed with advanced colon cancer in 2003 at the age of 23. The scholarship provides assistance to a rising senior medical student who embodies Regan’s spirit and character.

**On March 22 from 4-10 p.m., Five Guys Burgers and Fries on Airport and University will be hosting a fundraiser for the Gumbo Chili Showdown. Ten percent of all sales from this time period will be donated to the Regan Robinson Young Scholarship Fund. Department of Neurology to Relocate

On April 2, 2012, the University of South Alabama Department of Neurology is relocating its clinical care offices from the current offices at Infirmary West to Knollwood Physicians Group at 3301 Knollwood Drive - 4 Medical Park.

The neurology department has recently expanded with the addition of two new faculty members with expertise in multiple sclerosis and stroke. This move will provide improved and expanded space for the growing practice.

Mark Your Calendar: Sickle Cell Regional Conference

The 2012 Annual Sickle Cell Regional Conference, Practical Issues XII: Casting the Net II, is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 7, 2012, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 8, 2012, from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

This event will be held in the John Counts Room at the University of South Alabama Mitchell Center.
