USA College of Medicine Welcomes Dr. Robert McClellan

Dr. Robert McClellan was recently appointed assistant professor of pediatrics at the University of South Alabama College of Medicine.

He received his bachelor’s degree from Vanderbilt University, and he earned his medical degree from the University of South Alabama College of Medicine in 2006.

Dr. McClellan completed both a pediatric residency and internship at the University of Louisville in Louisville, Ky. In addition, he completed a pediatric nephrology fellowship at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford University Medical Center in Palo Alto, Calif.

Dr. McClellan is certified by the American Board of Pediatrics and is the recipient of the Pediatric Nephrology Career Award from Kosair Children’s Hospital.

The University of South Alabama Health System hosted its Healthy U-S-A Fair on August 24, 2012, at the USA Faculty Club.

The event provided health screenings, and USA Physician Group providers were on hand to answer questions. More than 200 USA employees attended the event.

Blood Drive Aug. 30 & 31

The University of South Alabama Medical Center is hosting a LifeSouth Community Blood Centers Blood Drive at the USA Medical Center Bloodmobile in the parking lot in front of Human Resources.

The dates and times are as follows:

Thursday, August 30 from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Friday, August 31 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

All registered donors will receive a free meal ticket and a LifeSouth recognition item.

Reminder: 2012 Sickle Cell Conference

The University of South Alabama College of Medicine will be hosting the 2012 Sickle Cell Conference on Sept. 7-8, 2012.

The conference, "Practical Issues XII: Casting the Net II," will be held at the USA Mitchell Center Globe at 5950 Old Shell Road in Mobile.

The dates and times are as follows:

Friday, September 7th 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Saturday, September 8th 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The conference features nationally and locally recognized experts in medicine, nursing, and allied health. Attendees can participate in the entire conference or choose to attend either day.

Dr. Robert “Bob” Adams, nationally recognized expert on stroke prevention in sickle cell disease, will be the keynote speaker for the conference. He will lecture on "Primary Stroke Prevention Works: The Falling Rates of Childhood Stroke in SCD."

Dr. Adams serves as professor of neuroscience and co-director of the comprehensive stroke and cerebrovascular program at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, S.C. In addition, he serves as director of the South Carolina REACH Stroke Network.

The Sickle Cell Conference is devoted to educating healthcare professionals on current aspects of sickle cell disease treatment, related complications, and psychosocial issues. Continuing education credits are available.

The conference registration fee covers conference syllabi, continental breakfast, and lunch on Friday.
