Dr. Elizabeth Minto Named 2016 MS Leadership Class Valedictorian
Dr. Elizabeth Minto, assistant professor of neurology at the University of South Alabama College of Medicine and a neurologist with USA Physicians Group, recently was named class valedictorian of the 2016 MS Leadership Class by the Alabama and Mississippi Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. She earned this distinction by raising over $6,000 in donations for the fight against multiple sclerosis (MS).
In addition to being awarded the title of class valedictorian, Dr. Minto also achieved prestigious Golden Circle recognition by the National MS Society. Golden Circle membership is awarded to participants who raise $1 or more for each of the 4,700 persons with MS in Alabama. Currently, she has raised $6,060 for the fight against MS, surpassing her original goal of $4,700.
Dr. Minto said she decided to work to raise funds for the National MS Society because she wanted to help those already diagnosed with MS, while also supporting the search for a cure for MS.
“While it is exciting that in the last 20 years we have gone from having no effective treatments to today having 14, it is heartbreaking that there is still no cure, nor a known cause.” Dr. Minto said.
According to Dr. Minto, with the ongoing fundraising efforts of the MS Society we can help find more treatments for MS, more understanding of how to restore function to those affected and even how to prevent MS.
In addition, a resident physician in the USA Department of Neurology will be beginning his fellowship training in the field of MS upon his graduation in 2017; this is training that is supported in part by funding from the National MS Society and will further directly benefit patients living with MS.
Dr. Minto attended the USA College of Medicine for two years before completing her medical degree at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine in 2003. She completed both an internship in internal medicine and her residency training in neurology at Vanderbilt University.
Dr. Minto is board-certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, and is a certified MS specialist through the Consortium of MS Centers. She is currently a member of the American Academy of Neurology, the Medical Association of the State of Alabama and serves as president of the Medical Society of Mobile County. She has also received the Red Sash Award for Teaching Excellence every year since 2013 and was a 2015 Top 40 Under 40 honoree in Mobile Bay Magazine.
