Dr. Debra Davis, Dean of the College of Nursing, has confidence in her nursing students. She recently received her seasonal flu shot from nursing student Ben Riebese at a flu vaccine clinic for USA Employees. CON faculty (including Dr. Bridget Robinson - center) played a large role in the efficiency and success of the flu shot clinics. Approximately 1,000 vaccines were given in one day - a record number for a single day. Additional clinics are now being scheduled. Details will be emailed to employees.

Med School Cafe' - Where Art and Science Meet
Dr. Troy Stevens, professor of pharmacology and director of the Center for Lung Biology at the University of South Alabama College of Medicine will lecture at the Mobile Museum of Art on Oct. 21, 2009, as part of the Med School Café, the USA Physicians Groups monthly lecture series.
Dr. Stevens will discuss the center's outreach program Percipio, a collection of colorful, striking images that were produced by scientists at the USA College of Medicine, in the process of conducting their research.
Percipio is a Latin term meaning to learn through the senses. The program is designed to educate the community about science through art.
Lunch will be provided for lecture attendees.

Dr. Paul F. Rider was recently appointed as assistant professor of surgery at the University of South Alabama College of Medicine and will serve in the division of colorectal surgery.
He has advanced training in colorectal surgery. While he treats all conditions related to the colon and rectum, some of his areas of expertise include surgical management of colon cancer, rectal cancer and rectal prolapse.
Dr. Rider graduated from Emory University in Atlanta with a bachelor of science degree in biology and a bachelor of arts degree in economics. He earned his medical degree from USA.
Dr. Rider conducted his surgery residency at the University of Kentucky in Lexington, Ky., where he received the Outstanding Resident Teaching Award. In addition, he completed a fellowship in colon and rectal surgery at the Ochsner Health System in New Orleans.
Dr. Rider is a member of the American College of Surgeons, the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons and the American Medical Association.

Extreme Bowling To Benefit COM Scholarship Fund
The USA College of Medicine chapter of the Student National Medical Association (SNMA) is hosting the second annual Relay for Regan Extreme Bowling Invitational. The event, which raises money for the Regan Robinson-Young Memorial Scholarship, will take place Oct. 15, 2009, from 8:30 to 10:30 p.m. at AMC Florida Lanes.
The Regan Robinson-Young Memorial Scholarship was established in 2007 after the medical student it is named for died of colon cancer just months short of graduation. She was 26.
Robinson-Young, a graduate of Auburn University, entered medical school at USA in 2002. She was diagnosed during her second year of medical school at the age of 23. Because of her dedication to school and the medical profession, she chose to continue her studies.
Robinson-Young was a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and SNMA. As a member of SNMA, she spearheaded numerous service activities, including Light the Night and community HIV/AIDS awareness forums.
Robinson-Young received her doctorate of medicine posthumously. Her story of persistence and loyalty continues to be an inspiration for the university and the community.
The Relay for Regan Extreme Bowling Invitational is $20 per person or $120 per team. Each team can have up to six members. Awards will be given to the top bowling team and the team to raise the most money. All proceeds will go toward the Regan Robinson-Young Memorial Scholarship.
